What is involved?

You will learn the skills and knowledge that you need to teach others. This includes learning how to devise lessons plans, assess learners' progress, keep records, motivate adult learners and give effective feedback. You will also develop reflective and proactive planning skills to help you plan your future professional development. There are some written assignments, marked by your teachers and moderated by City & Guilds, to assess the knowledge and theory you have learned. The practical teaching skills you have developed will be assessed during a demonstration, involving a short teaching session, delivered to the other trainees in the class. As this is a blended learning programme, you will need to be able to organise your time effectively to get the most out of the course. You should make full use of the materials and resources on New Learning, the college's Virtual Learning Environment, and contribute to the forums. There will also be some tasks to complete which require collaboration with your peers.

What will my career options be?

This qualification is designed for new entrants to the Further Education and Skills sector. It is an induction qualification, which will provide you with an understanding of the principles and practices underpinning teaching/training in the sector. Depending on what job you want to go into, you may need to gain further qualifications. Some candidates choose to progress onto the Certificate in Education and Training (CET) or the Diploma in Education and Training (DET) depending on their role. You may choose to spend some more time on achieving higher-level subject qualifications. Alternatively, you can look for employment as a teacher, trainer or instructor in the sector.

What is the cost?

£350 and this includes the exam registration fee of £51. It is possible to pay in installments depending on credit history.

What do I need?

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but to benefit from the learning and to successfully complete your pre-entry assessment, you must achieve the minimum result of a level 2 score in literacy and communication skills. You will have an interview and an initial assessment before being offered a place on the course; this will enable you to ensure that it is right choice for you. If it isn't, we'll advise you of other possibilities. Applicants must be confident at using ICT.
