What is involved?

You will learn about the technical and practical skills needed to make garments, including basic patterns, pattern adaptation, hand and machine sewing skills, pockets and other details, zips and fastenings, characteristics of different fabrics, standard and personal body measurements, making up and finishing techniques. The course is based at Newham College's East Ham Campus (ten minutes walk from East Ham tube) in our modern and well-equipped garment production and pattern cutting workshops. By the end of the course you will have a folder of sewing samples and garment making techniques, and you will have produced a collection of fully-finished garments for your wardrobe.

What will my career options be?

To develop your skills and knowledge of fashion and garment production you could join one of our day courses Making It In Fashion or Skills for the Fashion Industries, or alternatively you could join our Bespoke Tailoring day course to learn the skills needed for employment in garment production. Our day courses are timetables for 2.5 days a week to allow people to work part-time whilst studying. You will receive personal advice and guidance about progression during the Sew Fantastic course.

What is the cost?

The Home fee is £150 (Plus £31.50 Exam Fee) In some instances a course may be free - please refer to the 'What do I Need to Pay' screen for more information. Some materials will be provided, but you will need to supply your own fabrics and trimmings.

What do I need?

You need to be interested in learning about sewing and making clothes ! There's a great atmosphere on the course, and you need to be able to attend the course two evenings a week, every week. The course may also be available as an afternoon/evening course.
