What is involved?

You will learn how to develop your creative and technical abilities to produce a portfolio of drawing, design and practical work, and you will also learn how the fashion industry works.

The main subjects you will study are drawing and illustration techniques, working to a brief, the design process, colour, media and materials, and practical garment making.

You will also learn about contemporary fashion practice - Newham College has very close links with the sector, and owns and operates the fabulous Fashion and Textile Museum as a world-renowned exhibition and training centre

The course includes enrichment and work experience opportunities, plus development of the personal skills needed for higher level study and eventual employment.

Additionally, students who do not already have GCSE English and maths at grade C+ will attend Functional Skills or alternative English and maths study as part of their study programme.


What will my career options be?

This course will equip you to progress to BTEC Creative Design for Fashion and Textiles level 2 programme, your next step towards higher level study.

There is a wide variety of alternative progression opportunities, including application for apprenticeship employment.

What do I need?

You need at least two GCSEs grade D-G, or an appropriate fashion, art or textiles qualification at Entry Level 3 (or equivalent).

You will be invited to an informal interview for the course, where you need to be able to demonstrate your interest and commitment to the course.

Previous fashion or textiles study is not required, but if you have examples of drawings, art work, photography, textiles, or garments you have made or designed please bring them to your interview.
