The course will develop your creative, craft and technical skills in producing garments for theatre productions and other costume use, and will guide you to acquire the knowledge, understanding and professionalism required for employment in costume.
You will learn about working to a brief or specification and about the process of costume design and development, and you will learn the practical and technical skills needed to make costumes - sewing skills using a variety of fabrics and materials, garment construction, pattern cutting and adaptation, tailoring techniques, fittings and alterations, and millinery.
While some sessions will be delivered as practical workshops to develop particular skills, you will learn principally through taking part in design-and-make projects, with many based on a 'live' industry brief set by a costume specialist.
Regular appraisal and accurate self-evaluation of your work is a vital aspect of your professional development - at all stages of the course you will be encouraged to aim for the highest possible standard of work and to make good progress towards fulfilling your career ambitions.
