What will I learn?

Fashion is a highly successful industry that provides a very wide range of rewarding jobs and career opportunities. If you want to develop your interests and abilities in preparation for a career in fashion, this course is for you.

What is involved?

This course introduces the creative and practical processes involved in designing and making clothes. It will also guide you to investigate how the fashion industry operates.

The course will show you how to develop your drawing skills to produce sketchbooks, creative ideas and fashion illustrations. You will learn about the design process, including how to work to a brief, how to research, storyboards, design inspiration and development. The course also explores how to acheive designs using computer software.

Sewing skills, garment construction and other essential practical skills are also covered. In addition to this you will learn about the fashion industry and the way the industry works to sell fashion products.

You will learn in a variety of ways - through demonstrations and instruction, completing practical tasks and activities, by design exercises and research, and by presentation and evaluation of your work.
You will learn in a small group, with a high level of teaching and support.

The course is based at East Ham Campus in modern, well-equipped garment production and pattern cutting workshops. You will take part in an induction at the beginning of the course.


What will my career options be?

If you successfully complete the course you will be awarded the Gateway Making It In Fashion Extended Certificate level 1 qualification, and you will also gain a Progression Award at level 1.

To develop your skills and understanding further you should apply to join the Skills for the fashion Industries Diploma level 2 course in February.

Alternatively, you may choose to progress to study on our Bespoke Tailoring programme or other specialist courses at Newham College - as a wide range of courses are available.

You will receive full information and personal guidance about opportunities for progression. This will help you to achieve the best possible next step at the end of the course.

The Home fee is £1250 (Plus £95 Exam Fee).

What do I need?

You do not need any special qualifications to join the course, but commitment, creativity and an interest in fashion is essential.

Reliability, punctuality and 100% attendance are expected on the course, just as they are when working in a fashion company.
