You will learn about the technical and practical skills that are needed to make garments, including basic patterns, pattern adaptation, hand and machine sewing skills, pockets and other details, zips and fastenings, characteristics of different fabrics, standard and personal body measurements, making up and finishing techniques.
The course is based at Newham College's East Ham Campus (ten minutes walk from East Ham tube) in our modern and well-equipped garment production and pattern cutting workshops.
By the end of the course you will have a folder of sewing samples and garment making techniques, and you will also have produced fully-finished garments for your wardrobe.
To develop your skills and knowledge of fashion and garment production you should continue to study the Sew Fantastic course at Level 2
Alternatively you could join one of our day time fashion courses, such as 'Making It In Fashion' or 'Skills for the Fashion Industries', or you could join our Bespoke Tailoring day course to learn the skills needed for employment in garment production.
Our day courses are timetabled for 2.5 days a week, as this enables people to work part-time whilst studying.
You will receive personal advice and guidance about progression during the 'Sew Fantastic' course.
