This course will give you a thorough grounding in practice, policy and theory in health and social care and, at the same time, give you the study skills and confidence to succeed in higher education. The subjects covered include:
You will develop further understanding during a work placement and will combine theory and practice when you carry out a work based research project in a relevant area. You may also be eligible for support with your studies if you have a learning difficulty or disability. This support is free to UK residents
You would normally be expected to progress into higher education, probably a vocational course leading to employment in the caring professions. You could also apply for a general degree such as Sociology, Early Years or Health Studies. Newham College enjoys strong links with several London universities offering very suitable, highly regarded, Foundation Degree courses in Early Years or Health and Social Care.

A range of evidence may be considered when assessing your potential to succeed on an Access Diploma e.g. your life skills, previous employment and achievements. However, the general expectation is that a student will have evidence of good Level 2 (GCSE level) skills, for instance 4 GCSEs at grade C or above or an equivalent qualification. You will also be expected to successfully complete an initial assessment and, because of the nature of the course, a satisfactory DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
