What is involved?

This course enables you to reflect critically on the theories, purposes and practices underlying your teaching. By critically engaging with your practice in the light of current theoretical principles, you will be able to develop and refine your approaches to fostering learning. You will consider a range of issues as applied to PCET learners including: identifying learner needs; planning and delivering teaching; using resources; effective communication; social interaction in the classroom; assessing learning and evaluating teaching. It also covers aspects of policy and values in PCET, seeking to develop reflective professional practice across all of the above areas. There are 6 modules: Year 1: a) Introduction to teaching and learning; b) Planning and assessing; c) Applying theory to practice. Year 2: a) Reflecting on practice; b) Curriculum; c) Professional practice Year 1 of the course is level 4 for all students. In year 2 the choice is between level 5 or 6. To access level 6, you need to have a degree and your work needs to be judged as strong enough. If not, you remain on the level 5 route.


What will my career options be?

The course is validated by Canterbury Christ Church University. Upon successful completion, candidates will hold a Diploma in Education and Training/Professional Graduate Certificate in Education & Training. This is a full teacher training qualification for the further education and skills sector. They are currently able to apply for QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) status with the Society for Education and Training. Teachers of ESOL, Literacy and Numeracy may enrol on a level 5 Additional Diploma level 5 subject-specialist qualification if they do not already have one. Please note the college does not currently offer these programmes.

What is the cost?

The fee for year 1 is £2700 and the same for year 2. Applicants will be able to apply to Student Finance England for a tuition fee loan; please note that they do this for each year of the programme. The loan is repayable but not until you leave your course and are earning over £21,000. Please contact Student Finance England for more information. Textbook and materials costs will normally amount to at least £50 per year.


What do I need?

Students taking this course can be awarded either: Diploma in Education and Training Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) Students taking this course can be awarded either: a level 5 Diploma in Education and Training for those who hold a vocational qualification at level 3 or a level 6 Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for those who have a degree and are able to meet the academic requirements at level 5. All applicants need to be employed in the education or training of participants in the post-16 sector for an average of 3-5 hours per week and must have responsibility for the group they are teaching (a minimum of 6 learners). The minimum entry requirements are: a degree or level 3 vocational qualification in the subject you teach; GCSE English and maths or level 2 equivalents, or be able to demonstrate level 2 competencies at the initial assessment; a DBS check; proof of ID; and the ability to use ICT to write assignments and prepare teaching resources. Successful applicants will need to be able to secure a mentor to support them through the course.
