When I leave college I want to be...

Well Being

Newham College is committed to the health and safety of its staff, visitors and students and to its continuous improvement in standards of health and safety.

The Human Resources Team provides support and assistance to all Newham College staff. The College is committed to ensuring the mental and physical wellbeing and health of all staff. The team is available to confidentially discuss any issues that may be impacting on work or performance including work, personal and home issues. They are available to answer queries and offer advice and support on a range of issues including the extensive list of Family Friendly Policies.

The College has a variety of policies, services and terms and conditions of employment for staff that help maintain and support our employees. These include:

•    Generous annual leave
•    Maternity Leave - the College offers a competitive maternity leave scheme. If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact the Human Resources team
•    Paternity Leave - Ten days leave on full pay is available to an employee to enable them to be present at the birth of their child and/or meet family responsibilities after the birth. Shared Parental Leave is also available where the mother of the child chooses to return to work before the end of her maternity leave period. A qualifying service period applies to Paternity Leave and Shared Parental Leave. Please contact the Human Resources Team for further details.
•    Adoption Leave - Employees are entitled to adoption leave when adopting children if they are to be the primary carer. The qualifying service period is the same as the College's maternity leave scheme. If both partners work at the College, only one will be entitled to adoption leave
•    Parental Leave – Parental leave is available to assist parents and guardians with childcare concerns or to assist with the management of care of ill or disabled children.

Leave to care for sick dependents - this scheme applies to staff who need to care for sick dependants. The scheme applies to all employees regardless of length of service or hours worked. In cases of long-term and terminal illness, where the employee is considered the sole supporter, extensions of leave may be granted at the discretion of the College.

Flexible working allows staff to change their patterns or total hours of working through discussions with their manager, subject to the exigencies of the service.

An independent Occupational Health service is available to support staff whilst they are at work, or to assist and support staff back into work after a period of illness or injury.

Newham College is a signatory to the Mindful Employer Charter, promoting equality and a supportive, positive environment for all employees and prospective employees who have mental health issues. Please click on the Mindful Employer logo below to find out more about our commitment to be positive about mental health.

An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is available for all permanent members of staff via an independent provider. The confidential helpline is free to contact 24 hours a day and includes telephone counselling and advice services for a number of issues that can affect everyone at some time, including legal and financial concerns. Face-to-face counselling sessions can also be accessed free of charge through the EAP.

A confidential and independent Dyslexia Helpline is available to all staff who have been diagnosed with, believe they may have, or who manage those with, dyslexia. The helpline gives confidential advice on dyslexia as well as hints and tips on how to manage aspects of work affected by the condition. Assessments are available for permanent staff who believe they may have dyslexia or who need to be reassessed.
