What is the Diploma Worth?
The Construction and the Built Environment Diploma is offered at three Levels at Newham College:

• Foundation Diploma equivalent to 5 GSCE grades D-G
• Higher Diploma equivalent to 7 GCSE grades A*-C
• Advanced Diploma equivalent to 3.5 A Level grades A*-E

Everything About Construction
During the diploma you will learn:

• Designing the built environment: learn how the built environment is designed and constructed.
• Creating the built environment: developing a range of skills and knowledge needed in different industries.
• Valuing and using the built environment: analysing the need for good management and continuous maintenance.

On the course you will:

• Go on construction site visits.
• Learn how to use tools, methods and materials.
• Learn how to work safely in the construction industry.

The Mixing Desk
You will take compulsory units which will develop your understanding and knowledge of the subject. You must also complete courses in English, Maths and ICT. An optional course will make up the rest of your Diploma. For your optional courses, you can choose a specialist course which will extend your knowledge of your Diploma or a completely different subject.

What Could This Diploma Lead To?
The Diploma will give you the skills you need for either university or work.

It could lead you to a university degree in construction management, building services engineering, housing practice, planning or architecture.

It could help you begin a career as a building services contractor, construction worker, electrician, engineer, urban planner, property developer, estate agent, restorer
of old buildings or architect.

You might choose to use the skills you have learnt in this diploma to go into a different area of study or employment sector.
