Deaf Support FAQ
A person who enables deaf and hard of hearing students to access the course lessons. What method of communication does a communicator use? The communicator uses the communication method you want. This can be: · Sign Language (British Sign Language/Sign Supported English) How else can the communicator help me? The communicator can: · Clarify language A person who will have 1:1 tutorials with you to clarify your work. How can a support tutor help me? A support tutor can: · Go through your work with you How do I get communication support? How will the communicator know what my support needs are? A support tutor will assess you. Will I only have a communicator in class? We provide communicator support in the classroom and · On work experience What support will I get in exams? You may be entitled to special exam arrangements. This may be extra time and communication support. Is there communication support at all sites? Yes How many deaf students are there? There are usually about 40-50 deaf students each year. How many communicators are there? There are about 15 communicators. How will I meet other deaf students? You will be invited to come into the college and meet other deaf students and the communicators before the courses start. Once you have started at college you can meet your friends in the canteen and Student Life. Do I have to pay for the communicator? No. Will I have the same communicator for all my lessons?
