Established as a college on the current site by London Borough of Newham in 1985, the result of a merger between East Ham and West Ham technical colleges with the aim 'to better serve the needs of the people of Newham'.
Newham College of FE has a reputation for widening student participation and an enormous range and variety of provision. The College has developed a comprehensive selection of outreach sites and learning partnerships across London, enlarging the college considerably.
Two main campuses, East Ham Campus, High Street South, London E6 6ER and Stratford Campus, Welfare Road, London E15 4HT and a number of local centres delivering learning in the heart of local communities in and around the London borough of Newham.
Ambience: Mix of mainly modern buildings built in the 60's. Superb facilities. Strong community atmosphere because many students live close by. Newham is one of the most diverse communities in England and approximately 63% of students are members of ethnic minority groups adding a rich cultural mix to the college.
One of the largest further education colleges both nationally and in the Greater London area, with over 20,000 full- and part-time students. Many of the students are local, and over 80% are aged over 19 on entry with an average age of 31.
Newham College though its university centre delivers higher education with The Open University, Canterbury Christ Church University (subject to approval) and Westminster University.

The College has an ongoing commitment to capital investment that has meant serious investment in cutting edge IT technology and renovation of buildings. £15 million investment over the last ten years means the college now boasts vast new computer centres for student independent study, science building, art, design and fashion centre plus industry standard facilities and recording suites for music technology.
Investment also includes the New Learning (a sophisticated virtual learning environment to support students), dramatically increased the nursery provision, provide a dedicated 'Academy' for 'A' level students at Stratford, and built a new extension with plans to house a larger library, Youth Parliament and Young People's Centre at the East Ham Campus, plus further improvements to IT infrastructure and facilities.

Areas of Learning:
Vast. Newham offers substantial programmes in 12 out of the 14 national programme areas. The provision includes the pioneering Newham College Access Diploma (NewCAD) framework - an overarching unitised framework integrating skills for life with vocational and academic study assessed with accredited (OCN) achievement.
NewCAD is attracting considerable external attention within the programme for government development of a new national framework for entry and foundation level studies. Also standard NVQs, GNVQs, AVCEs and precursors, GCEs at AS and A2 levels, Access to Higher Education courses, Modern Apprenticeships, Foundation courses BTEC National Certificates and Diplomas, Higher National Certificates and Diplomas, RSA, City & Guilds and many other specialist qualifications.
Has an Associate Faculty of Community Education (a strategic partnership with Newham LEA) and the Centre for Innovation and Partnerships, a highly successful faculty that drives regeneration through education in the local business community, developing bespoke training and inspiring economic regeneration with small business owners and large employers.

Staffing levels around 500 full time equivalents. The last inspection by the FEFC Inspectorate drew the conclusion that 'there is much good teaching'. Grades were all satisfactory or good with ESOL, Basic Skills, and provision for learning difficulties graded as excellent. Support for students, governance and general resources were also graded as excellent.
