Apprenticeship levels

There are four types or levels of apprenticeship available and it is important that you consider the right level of study based on your interests, qualifications, skill level and where you would like to progress in the future. Each level has different entry requirements which will be specified with each apprenticeship vacancy, alongside any additional qualities that the employer is looking for.

  • Intermediate apprenticeships (Level 2) are equivalent to five GCSEs at grades 9-4. It is a great way to take that first step into starting your future career and offers an alternative to staying at college and learning in the traditional classroom environment.
  • Advanced apprenticeships (Level 3) are equivalent to 2 A Level passes. If you already have a Level 3 qualification, this apprenticeship route will enable you to develop work-based skills and experience in your chosen sector.
  • Higher apprenticeships (Level 4/5) are equivalent to the first stages of higher education such as a foundation degree. This can take up to 5 years to complete depending on the role and sector.
  • Degree apprenticeships (Level 6/7) are similar to higher apprenticeships but also offer a pathway to gaining a full bachelor’s degree (Level 6) or master’s degree (Level 7).
