About CfEM
Delivering improvements in maths outcomes for post-16 students
Funded by the Department for Education, the Centres for Excellence in Maths (CfEM) programme is aimed at creating new and enhanced teaching approaches for maths and delivering improvements in maths outcomes for 16-19 year olds in colleges across the country.
Newham College is the only Further Education College in London selected as one of the 21 Centres for Excellence in Maths across England, and we work with the other two London CfEMs – Christ the King Sixth Form and Leyton Sixth Form – to form the London CfEM Hub, providing cross-London networking and CPD opportunities.
Newham College CfEM supports teachers, managers, SLT, colleges and organisations in our network with regular network meetings, bespoke CPD sessions, and action research, a chance to participate in national trial research and access to resources developed throughout the CfEM programme. This support is ultimately designed to support our maths learners in achieving a Level 2 maths qualification, be it GCSE maths, Functional Skills or otherwise.
Our learners across the network have already benefitted from the CPD, action research and networking that teachers can do, and have been able to take part in activities such as video logging, in-class mastery-based interventions, and of course the FE maths challenge!
Network partners can get involved through attending network meetings, CPD sessions, becoming involved in action research or by being involved in the national trials. As a CfEM trialling the Whole College Approach, network partners will also benefit from early access to information and mini-trials for how to ensure your whole organisation is supporting mathematics for all of your learners.
Newham College is committed to helping raise the aspirations and achievements of post-16 students who are working towards gaining a Functional Skills maths qualification or improving their GCSE Mathematics.
