This course is for people who would like to expand their knowledge and skills in bespoke tailoring and high level garment construction. If you are interested in developing your abilities towards a career in high quality tailoring then this course is for you. There is a high demand for people with expert tailoring skills, and good career prospects in tailoring, costume and garment production.
What is involved?
Bespoke means hand crafted and individually made. Bespoke tailoring involves the personal attention of a cutter who measures the customer, creates and cuts a pattern, and directly supervises the making and fitting of the garment. You will learn further skills with attention to high quality standards in bespoke tailoring, and the technical and practical skills involved in the hand production tailored garments.
You will develop your hand sewing skills, workshop practice, using sewing equipment, fit, bespoke patterns, block construction, canvases and bastes, making up and alterations, and finishing techniques and make a range of bespoke and well constructed garments fitting the skills necessary for the sector.
You will learn in a variety of ways - through talks and demonstrations, by completing practical tasks and exercises, and by presentation and evaluation of your work. The course is based at East Ham Campus (five minutes from East Ham tube) in modern, well-equipped garment production and pattern cutting workshops. You will take part in an induction at the beginning of the course.
The course has been successful for many previous learners in finding work in Tailors in Savile row and others. It can also lead to working in the fashion sector and within costume departments. previous learners have found work in companies such as Chittingborough and Morgan, Thom Sweeney, The Royal Opera House to name but a few.
