Is the Course for me?

Access courses are for anyone who has been out of education for a period of time, or someone who has taken a break from education. So if you are looking to return to college in order to study at a higher level, to gain admission to a university or full-time employment, or because you just have a genuine passion for learning then this could be the course for you.

You must be aged 19 or over in order to enrol for this course and it would be beneficial for you to have an interest in studying a Travel and Tourism related degree; Access courses are mainly designed to prepare students for higher education.

What is involved?

This course will give you a thorough grounding in Travel, Tourism and Management, theories and practices.
You will also undertake a core study programme, which is designed to ensure you have fundamental skills to aid progression to university these include: Academic Writing Skills, Examination Skills, Spreadsheets, Problem Solving Skills, Preparation for Higher Education and Study Skills.

Mandatory units will include: Business skills in travel and tourism, Business Planning and Budgets, Customer Service, Event management, Marketing, Travel and Tourism Industry, Legislation in travel and Tourism, Understanding HR.

Progression

Most students progress into higher education this course will prepare you for a degree in Travel and Tourism Management. However it also contains many features of other degrees such as airline and aviation management, business management, marketing, project and event management.
Although, you may wish to go into employment when you complete the course as this is also an option and you will be well equipped with many skills such as: working knowledge and skills of business planning and budgets, and marketing strategy, event planning and customer service which are desirable employment skills.

The Access to Travel and Tourism Management pathway is a level 3 course; this means it is equivalent to 3 A-levels.
You will receive advice and guidance during the course as well as help with your UCAS application. Our learners go onto study at prestigious universities and some have even received scholarships. Last year over 10% of our learners went to Russell Group Universities these are the most prestigious universities within the UK.
The national average is 3% as such you can see how doing an Access course at Newham College can open doors to the best universities.

Course Requirements

A relevant level 2 course and evidence of level 2 English and Math. Most Access or Pre-Access learners may have been out of education for the last few years and therefore every student is given an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy which will enable staff to ascertain their starting point. You will take part in these tests before you begin and it will be necessary for you to achieve level 2 in both tests.
If you do not meet the criteria then the college has a range of alternative programmes open to you such as Pre-Access.
