You will learn a variety of skills to prepare yourself for employment in a particular vocational sector within Science.

Course content

Science is a very exciting and changing sector and this course will give you an introduction to science and you will cover the three main sectors being biology, chemistry and physics.

This course builds on the experience gained studying at either entry 3 science or key stage 3 science delivered in mainstream education.

You will learn in a variety of ways - through talks and demonstrations, by completing classroom practical’s and exercises. There will also be independent study and your progress will be evaluated via coursework.

The course includes industry research and essay writing, the development of investigation skills and exposure to a range of the employability options within Science. English, maths and IT will form an integral part of your studies on the course and wherever possible potential visits to employers and the science museum will also be conducted.

Qualifications on completion

  • BTEC Introductory Diploma in Applied Science

Entry requirements

You will need to have a minimum of level of Entry 3 in English & Maths plus any other qualification equivalent to Entry 3 or similar in any subject. You will also require:

  • Evidence of an understanding of the three branches of Science.
  • Understanding of how to work safely and sensibly in a scientific environment.
  • Evidence of a willingness to learn and a professional approach.
  • Record of good attendance at previous establishment.

Progression

The course will develop your understanding of the scientific industry and will enable you to progress on to further study on the BTEC level 2 programme, GCSE, apprenticeship within the field or entry level employment

Further study and completion of Level 2 Science could open up additional career opportunities within a range of science sectors including industrial and process as well as eligibility to join a science apprenticeship such as Science Laboratory Technician Level 3.
