This specialist work-related course, will give you the key knowledge and practical skills required in order to pursue a career within science. It will also suit students who excel in coursework. However, there are 4 exams over two years.

Course content

The course consists of 7 core units with 6 optional over 2 years. The optional specialist pathways include Applied Science, Forensic Science and Biomedical Science

This course investigates the application of science through practical activities from which the theory is then drawn. This provides opportunities for you to develop your practical laboratory skills to a high level.

There are laboratory-based practical assignments, supported by self-study, presentations, group work and discussion.

You will be externally examined on 2 units during the first year and another 2 units during the second year.

  • Using mathematical tools in science

  • Mathematical calculations for Science
  • Physiology of Human Body Systems
  • Physiology of Human Regulation and Reproduction
  • Microbiological Techniques
  • Medical Physics Techniques
  • Chemical Laboratory Techniques
  • Biochemistry and Biochemical Techniques
  • Chemistry for Biology Technicians
  • Genetics and Genetic Engineering
  • Biomedical Science Techniques
  • Principles of plant and soil science
  • Industrial chemical reactions
  • Chemical periodicity and its applications
  • Industrial applications of organic chemistry

Qualifications on completion

  • BTEC National Extended Diploma in Applied Science

Entry requirements

You will need a minimum of 4 GCSE at grades 9-4 including double science or a Level 2 Diploma in Applied Science (Merit or Distinction). Students without a GCSE in English or Maths will be expected to add a GCSE to their programme.

The course prepares you for university and a range of higher education courses and jobs including Radiography, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Chemical Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Psychology, Genetics, Veterinary Science, Biochemistry and Forensic science, Biomedical, Medical laboratory, Optometry, Laboratory analyst, Research scientist, Audiology, Teaching, Science journalism, high-level apprenticeships.
