If you wish to pursue a career in IT, this course will give you the knowledge and understanding that is required for success within the industry.

This qualification is designed to support learners who wish to study IT as a one-year, full-time course.

Course description

You will be required to complete six units of which 4 are mandatory and 2 are external. This will allow you to gain a BTEC Extended Diploma in Information Technology.

The course will develop your skills and understanding in each of the following areas:

  • Technologies used on the Internet
  • Information technical systems
  • Setting up, troubleshooting and designing small and large networks
  • Creating systems to manage information
  • Effectively design and administer complex networks to suit business needs
  • Working as an IT Network Engineer in a professional environment

You will also complete Skills Zone for developing soft skills, employability, CV creation and job hunting.

You will learn in a variety of ways – through talks and demonstrations, by completing practical tasks and exercises, by independent study and by evaluation and assessment of your work. The course includes industry research and report writing, the development of your CV and identifying the employment role that best suits your abilities and aspirations. English, Maths and IT will form an integral part of your studies on the course.

Field trips are also planned during the course.

The course is based at the UK’s only Samsung Digital Academy where you will benefit from working on different Samsung gadgets including Samsung VR Gear. This facility also has a games room for learners.

Additional information

Entry requirements

You will need to satisfy one of the following entry requirements:

  • 5 GCSEs passes at grades A*-C including English and Maths
  • Successful completion of a Level 2 course to a published standard (for example, with a merit grade) with Functional Skills gained at level 2 in English or, where more appropriate*, Maths
  • A recognised precursor qualification, such as BTEC Level 2 certificates, extended certificates, with a minimum of a Merit grade, or diplomas with a minimum of a Merit grade pass and Functional Skills gained at level 2 in English and/or Maths
  • Entry onto all full time courses is also subject to:

    • Completion of a college assessment
    • Successful interview

    Overseas equivalent qualifications will also be considered as determined by qualified guidance staff within the Admissions team.

    Applicants will be required to sit an initial assessment of their IT, English and Maths ability.

    This course is only open to 16 to 18 year olds.


Students typically progress to our level 3 year 2 TecBac Course, allowing them to gather a deeper understanding of Web Development and Social Media for Digital Marketing, Cyber Security or Application Development.

The course will give you a good foundation in computer programming that will help you in your journey to secure employment. It will help you add valuable skills to your CV and also give you the tools you will need to find and develop a suitable position.

  • Level 3 year 2 Advanced Technical Diploma in Digital Technologies
  • Level 3/4 Software development apprenticeship
  • A degree programme at university
  • Full time employment
