Are you an aspiring hairdresser? Do you want to develop the skills which will enable you to confidently cut, colour, blow-dry and creatively style someone's hair? Then this is the course for you!

This course is for people who are passionate about becoming the best they can be. It offers a practical, real-world approach to hairdressing to help you achieve your ambitions and reach your potential. It is designed to develop your hairdressing skills and knowledge to industry standards which will help you gain the experience and confidence to work within the exciting industry of hairdressing.

Course description

You'll be taught by our highly skilled team of professional Hairdressing staff in specialist studios at East Ham campus. Practical assessments take place throughout the year on paying clients. During the course, you will produce a portfolio of evidence containing both practical and theory work. Theory aspects of your course are assessed either by taking an online exam or completing assignments.

Enrichment activities

A range of enrichment activities are incorporated within the programme including lectures by guest speakers from leading stylists and salon managers and visits to various industry leaders, trade events or seminars.

You will have an opportunity to participate in internal and external events where you will be able to showcase your skills.

You will take part in our end of year event where you will be given the opportunity to use your creative design skills complete a look for the catwalk.

i-Learning sessions

This is additional time embedded in your programme for your study to promote independent learning. This time is used to work through assignments, complete homework activities and conduct wider reading and research.

Your course tutors will be working with you to set realistic targets that will enable you to achieve your goals. Your targets will be monitored weekly by your tutors and actions plans and support put in place to assist you in achieving your targets.

Entry requirements

  • GCSEs at D or above in English and Maths
  • Successful completion of a Level 1 course
  • You need to enjoy working with people
  • Have good communication skills, along with a good level of written and spoken English
  • You must be willing to purchase a professional kit and a uniform for this course.

You will be invited to the college for an initial assessment and interview to determine your suitability for the course.

Progression

You may progress onto any of the following courses:

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Women's Hairdressing
  • City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Barbering
  • City & Guilds NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing
  • City & Guilds Level 2 Hair and Media Make-up

A range of City and Guilds Level 2 Awards in hairdressing or beauty (eg. in cutting men’s hair, scalp massage, eye lash extensions, Apply Make up or reception duties).

Fees and funding

The course fee for adults is £1286 (plus £75 exam fee).
