Are you an aspiring barber? This one year course is designed for anyone who is interested in the Barbering Industry; it will cover a range of Barbering skills to provide a range of employment possibilities in a barbershop or salon and a range of other progression opportunities.

This is an opportunity for learners to start on the route to becoming a barber, experiencing and carrying out Barbering services within our well-equipped salons. You will then, after a successful skills test, be able to progress onto a Level 2 Barbering or Hairdressing programme.

Course description

If you wish to gain valuable insight into the barbering industry then this is the course for you. You will develop basic skills and relevant industry knowledge, through experiential learning of selected techniques and products. This course is designed for individuals who wish to achieve the basic skills required for progression in the Barbering industry from junior level.

This course will ensure you are on the right path in developing sufficient communication and occupational skills for progression onto a Level 2 barbering or hairdressing related programme.

You will be taught by our highly skilled team of professional Hairdressing staff in specialist hair and barbering studios at east ham campus. Practical assessments take place throughout the year on paying clients. During the course, you will produce a portfolio of evidence containing both practical and theory work.

Students who wish to develop their literacy skills will also benefit, as this subject will be embedded within the vocational course.

During your course of study, you will carry out work placement within the barbering industry and be involved in college promotional events such as Children in Need and Red Nose Day fundraisers. This will help to build your communication skills and confidence.

Entry requirements

You will be given an initial assessment to ensure that you have basic writing and reading skills in English.

You will also need to have good communication skills, a friendly and pleasant personality as well as good levels of personal presentation. In addition, you should be willing to work to deadlines.


After successfully completing this course, you'll progress on to Level 2 Hairdressing, Level 2 Barbering, Level 2 Beauty Therapy or Level 2 Hair & media make-up.

Fees and funding

This course is free for 16-18 students. The course fee for adults is £993 (plus £105 exam fee).
