Do you have a passion and enthusiasm for the study of Science? If so, then this is the course for you. This course will give you the opportunity to gain a nationally recognised vocationally specific qualification to enter employment as a science technician or assistant practitioner.

This course will also enable you to progress to other vocational qualifications if that is what you choose to do.

There are three specialist strands:

  • How can science unlock the secrets of a crime scene investigation through forensics
  • Developing applied scientific practical skills and techniques in Chemistry, Physics and Biology
  • Looking for a route into a career in the field of Medicine through Biomedical Science

Course description

This is a one-year full-time study programme for post-16 learners who wish to progress to the Extended Diploma in Applied Science in the second year, or a full two-year programme if studied alongside other Level 3 courses.

This course investigates the application of science through practical activities from which the theory is then drawn. This provides opportunities for you to develop your practical laboratory skills to a high level.

There are laboratory-based practical assignments, supported by self-study, presentations, group work and discussion.

You will be externally examined on two units during the first year and another two units during the second year.

Curriculum units

Over the two years you will complete three mandatory internally assessed units:

  • Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques
  • Laboratory Techniques and their Application
  • Investigative Projects

You will also complete four externally assessed units:

  • Principles and Applications of Science I and II
  • Science Investigation Skills
  • Contemporary Issues in Science

In addition, there will be six optional units for you to complete.
