This course will give learners the opportunity to gain a broad understanding and knowledge of scientific principles and practice and develop a range of related skills and techniques that are essential for successful performance in working life.
Throughout this course, you will cover the key scientific principles within the field of biology, chemistry and physics and will benefit from a practical and applied approach to learning in a vocational context covering modules such as principles of science, energy and our universe and biology and our environment.
This course builds on the experience gained studying at Level 1 and prepares learners for the next stage.
You will learn in a variety of ways - through talks and demonstrations, by completing classroom practical’s and exercises. There will also be independent study and your progress will be evaluated via 100% assessment coursework.
The course includes industry research and essay writing, the development of investigation skills and exposure to a range of the employability options within Science. English, maths and IT will form an integral part of your studies on the course and wherever possible potential visits to employers and the science museum will also be conducted.
The course is based at Newham College's Stratford campus (ten minutes from Stratford tube station) in modern, well-equipped practice laboratories.
In addition to having a Level 1 qualification in Science, students should be able to demonstrate:
The course will develop your understanding of the scientific industry and will enable you to progress on to further study on the BTEC Level 3 programmes or A levels. Learners will also be eligible to gain entry-level employment within a wide range of science sectors such as process, industrial, medical, or forensic.
Further study will open up additional career opportunities, including eligibility to join NVQ programmes such as the Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities or Laboratory Science.
This course is free for students aged 16-18. The course fee for adults (19+) is TBC.
