Enrolment 2022

It is not too late to reconsider your choices or change your plans. Whether you’re just looking to learn something new, have clear career goals in mind or have been out of education for a while, our teams will be on hand to discuss your study options and get you started.

At enrolment you can chat to our teachers about our courses, speak to a careers advisor or learn about any financial or additional support you may require while studying at Newham College.

We receive a high number of applications and may not be able to get back to all applicants immediately but rest assured, we will be in contact as quickly as possible.

What happens at enrolment depends on whether you have received an offer and your chosen course.

Step 1:

You will initially be seen by the Admissions team who will process your application (you’ll skip this stage if you have already received an offer), check your course and any other details provided.

If you have received a conditional offer or haven’t applied yet, the Curriculum team will need to have a look at your exam results (see step 2 below). If your grades are lower than expected for your chosen course, the Curriculum team will discuss your course options with you.

If you are aged 19 and over, Admissions will also need to discuss payment for your course, including either proof of employment, evidence that your loan application(s) has been approved (if applicable) or evidence of means-tested benefits to assess your eligibility for fees reduction or remission (if applicable).

You will also be referred to the Additional Learning Support team if such support is required.

If you have received an unconditional offer, you’ll then skip to step 3.

Step 2

You will be interviewed by the Curriculum team to assess your eligibility for your chosen course and check your qualifications. For some courses at Level 3 and above, your enrolment details will be forwarded to an academic tutor who will discuss your course options, criteria and course expectations further.

Your English and maths qualifications will also be checked. If you are unable to provide evidence of your GCSE English and maths grades, you will be asked to take an assessment to determine your current level for both English and maths, and ensure that you’re enrolled on the correct level of study.

Step 3

Once we have fully assessed and received all relevant documentation in steps 1 and 2, Admissions will finalise your enrolment, produce your College ID card and Learner Agreement, and you’re ready to start your course in September.

The whole process can take 1-2 hours or longer if you need to take an English or Maths assessment, so please be patient. We want to ensure that you are enrolled correctly and there are no issues for you later during your course.

Absolutely. You will be directed through the new applicant process before you are formally enrolled. Please allow extra time to accommodate this.

We are also happy to facilitate changes to an existing application as well, such as changing a course.

During enrolment, course availability will change on an hourly basis and you will be informed of the availability of your preferred course at enrolment. We strongly recommend that you attend your appointment in order to secure a space on your preferred course. You may opt to join a waiting list or choose another course if your preferred course is full.

Without certain documents, we will be unable to enrol you successfully:

• Proof of residency: please bring where applicable - British passport, British birth certificate (if you do not have a passport), EU Settlement letter, residency (biometric) card or ID, or Home Office documents. If your residency status is linked to another person, you will need to bring a marriage certificate and spouse’s visa, parent’s visa and your birth certificate. All documents must be original.
• Exam results and/or qualification certificates.
• Evidence of any means-tested benefits received by you or your household (if applicable). This can include Jobseekers’ Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance (WRAG), Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit, Pension Credit or any other benefits.
• Evidence of your employment status if you’re on a low income (less than £20,962 annually gross), e.g. payslips, bank statements.
• Evidence of any loan application(s) and/or financial support that has been applied for or approved (if applicable).

For learners aged 16-18, all courses are free but additional financial support is available to cover costs related to attending College. You can discuss this with the Admissions team at enrolment. Find out more about the finance support options available to you.

If you are aged 19 or older at the beginning of your course, whether you pay tuition fees will depend on your personal circumstances. Please discuss this with the Admissions team at enrolment.
