Latest updates about changes to GCSE grade awarding.

We understand how disruptive it has been this academic year with lockdowns and the announcement that exams have been cancelled once more.

Our overriding aim is to be fair to students this summer. Therefore in line with the latest Ofqual guidance, we would like to update you on the awarding of GCSE grades in 2021.

How will grades be calculated?

Newham College will be asked to send the relevant exam boards information for Maths and English based on what they know about your work and achievements. This will be based on the following metrics:

  • An AQA English and/or Pearson Maths assessment which will be supervised and held in exam conditions in the week beginning 17 May
  • December and February mock exam results which can be found on eTrackr
  • Student attendance records for English and/or Maths lessons
  • All submitted homework
  • All evidence that has been uploaded to OneDrive
  • We will take into account any additional support requirements as appropriate

This information will allow us to award grades that, as far as possible, reflect an actual grade. This is not a predicted grade, but a calculated grade.

Do I need to complete any new work for my school or college to submit a grade?

We will set an additional mock exam week beginning 17 May 2021. Students must make themselves available to take this assessment.

It is the student’s responsibility to work directly with the teacher to catch up on all missed assessments and work

It is also critical that ALL students are clear – we expect to see you back in classrooms as attendance will go towards the grade you will receive.

Can I see the grades my school or college submits for me?

No, this information will be kept confidential. Results will be released nationally on 12 August.

Can I take my exams another time?

There has been no information about whether the exam boards will be offering November resit exams but we will advise when this becomes clearer. However, we are very clear of all the evidence required that will reflect the grade awarded.

There will be an appeals process with further information about this to be released in due course.

If you have any further questions, please speak to your teachers who will be able to offer more support and guidance.

We wish you well and good luck for the summer!
