Few careers offer the satisfaction of teaching. If it is an option you have considered, but you are worried about the cost of training, Newham College has come up with the perfect solution. We're offering dynamic, enthusiastic graduates or experienced professionals, with a passion for their subject or trade, the chance to gain a qualified teaching qualification for post sixteen education while working in a paid teaching role at the college.

The graduate trainee teacher programme provides an excellent opportunity for talented individuals with a passion for helping others succeed in gaining a recognised qualification in teaching while undertaking paid employment. Teachers on the scheme will study for a Level 5 Diploma in Teaching enabling them to be fully qualified to work in post-16 education as a main grade lecturer. The qualification on this course is accredited by Pearson.

The scheme and role lasts for one academic year and requires at least two days of attendance at lessons to develop your skills and knowledge in teaching, learning and assessment alongside 3 days’ work on-site shadowing/co-delivering and small group teaching, after initial induction. You’ll be working alongside colleagues as a Newham College Trainee Teacher (Lecturer Scale band 1) with up to 11 hours of timetabled teaching activity per week in your specialist subject and across college departments to experience the unique environment of Newham College’s curriculum offer and its students. We’re keen to see graduates or professionally experienced trainees in the following subject areas:

  • Engineering
  • Science
  • Information Technologies/Computing
  • Health and care
  • Nursing
  • Physics
  • Maths

The in-service course will prepare you to teach in the diverse lifelong learning sector which comprises Further Education Colleges, work-based learning, private training companies, adult and community education and offender learning. You’ll get to experiment and develop skills across the college course, age groups and sites. Applicants need to have an initial degree or substantial professional skills, must hold English and maths at GCSE at high grade or L2 Functional Skills and proficient IT skills.

You will find that our environment is a stimulating place to work. We are known for our widening student participation in an area of London which has seen a great deal of investment. At the end of your first year and completion of your L5 course, you’ll be offered an interview for a permanent teaching role in the college*.

Please email teachertraining@newham.ac.uk to find out more or attend the open event from 3.30pm, 10 May at our East Ham Campus E6 6ER.

*Please note failure to complete the course or decision not to take up permanent employment in the college if employed as a Graduate Trainee may result in you having to pay a contribution to tutoring costs for the L5 course – up to £2000. You can apply for this course separately as a L5 trainee teacher student without the job role in the college – but to pass this course you will need to have 100 sourced hours of class teaching independently of the college and fund the course independently.
