Is the Course for me?

CELTA is a subject specific qualification which relates exclusively to teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). If you want to teach English as a second language to adults but have little or no previous experience of teaching, this highly practical and thorough introductory training course will be just right for you.

The course is accredited in the UK at Level 5 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF), so you must have a level 3 qualification before enrolling and a a high level of professional literacy.

What is involved?

The course deals with specific areas in the teaching of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). It includes each of the following areas:

  • Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
  • Language analysis and awareness
  • Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
  • Planning and resources for different teaching contexts
  • Developing teaching skills and professionalism

You will learn by a mixture of supervised teaching, observation of 'live' lessons taught by experienced teachers, peer observation, tutorials, and group and independent study. You will also have access to the computing resources in the College, including the latest multi-media facilities in the FLEX.
Your teaching skills will be assessed throughout the course and you will also be required to complete written assignments.

This nationally and internationally recognised qualification will enable you to teach English to adults in Britain and other countries. Successful candidates can apply for the Level 5 Additional Diploma in ESOL, or the combined ESOL/Literacy, or take a generic programme such as the Diploma in Education and Training or PGCE.
You can also gain some practical experience of teaching ESOL in a college or community setting.
