Dyslexia Support

The dyslexia support team seeks to remove barriers to learning, value all those who attend and play an integral role in supporting learners’ through their desired progression routes.

Newham College is a supportive and inclusive environment which recognises difference and promotes achievement and progression for all.

The support provided by the College will depend on your dyslexia report information. We will plan support based on disclosed details of your needs using information from you, your parents/carers (if appropriate), background information from careers services, social services, schools, etc. Every effort will be made by the College to meet your needs and you will be informed of the level of support that is planned for you. Any information will be dealt with confidentially and will be passed on to teaching staff and any others who need your support information.

If you think you might have dyslexia we will ask you to complete a very short questionnaire.

The answers you give will help us decide if you need a dyslexia assessment. If you do need to be assessed we will arrange the assessment with our qualified assessor. Once you have been assessed we will provide you with the support you need.

What can we offer you?

Assistive Equipment and Technologies – we can provide you with technologies that help with reading and writing in different ways. You will be assigned a tutor who can help you learn how to use these.

Tutorial Support - you will be offered a 1:1 or group tutorial every week where your tutor will help you with improving sight vocabulary, reading strategies, spelling strategies, handwriting, structuring written work, dictionary skills, study skills and checking written work/assignments.

Support Plans – your support plan will include recommendations from your dyslexia assessment including adjustments to lessons, guidance and strategies to overcome barriers. The plan will be given to your teachers so they make adjustments to help you in class. The plan will also tell your teachers what exam concessions you are entitled to.

In-class Support - you may need some support in some of your classes. We can provide you with assistive technologies to help you with your class work and note taking.

Exam Concessions - support for exams can include extra time (25%/50%), a scribe or a reader - this will be identified in your dyslexia report.
