Whether you want to secure a place at university or progress directly into employment, a GCSE in English and Maths will boost your job or university application and ultimately help you achieve your goals.
Newham College is committed to ensuring every student is sufficiently supported in their efforts to achieve the equivalent of a grade 4 or above in English and Maths. This reflects government policy that requires all students at college to possess a Level 2 qualification in English and Maths. If you join Newham College with a GCSE grade 3 or Functional Skills Level 1 (or equivalent) in either English or Maths, you will be expected to undertake classes and re-sit the GCSE exams at the end of the year to achieve a grade 4 or higher. You will receive expert support and study with excellent resources to help you achieve this.
If you have achieved up to grade 2/Entry 3 Functional Skills (or equivalent) when you join, you will continue studying Functional Skills English and/or Maths as part of your course timetable and continue to build up your skills in the appropriate subject with exams taken across the year at different times.
Adult students can study Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths qualifications to improve employability, enhance your prospects for apprenticeships, workplace and educational progression, or for entry requirements for Higher Education courses in the UK and beyond.
Part-time courses are available to adult students and are studied in the evenings at either campus.
Students with Level 1 Functional Skills or a GCSE Grade 3 (or equivalent) would be directed to take the appropriate GCSE programme.
Students without prior qualifications are required to take an online/written assessment to determine the right level of study.
