Essential English and maths qualifications to improve your employability or higher education prospects.

If you are enrolling on an Access course or an adult course of study and would like or need to continue with English and/or maths there are a few options available to you.

Functional Skills

There are Functional Skills short courses that will help you develop the skills you need for future career opportunities, real-life situations or further study. They are available on a part-time day or evening basis at both East Ham and Stratford campuses to suit your work or life commitments.

Full time study

We provide GCSE classes and Functional Skills classes in the evenings to go alongside full-time courses for full-time students.

  • If you hold a Level 1 Functional Skills or a GCSE Maths grade 3 which has been obtained within the last 3 years, you are eligible to enrol on GCSE Maths
  • If you hold an Entry Level qualification or GCSE grade 2 or lower, you are eligible to enrol on a Functional Skills qualification (up to Level 1)
  • If you hold an overseas qualification that can be validated by UK NARIC to the appropriate standard, you may be eligible to enrol for GCSE. Please speak to a member of the English and/or maths team during enrolment
  • If you do not fit into one of the categories above, there are screener tests held on evenings throughout September during the enrolment period. These are online tests for maths or online/written tests for English. The screening test determines whether your English and maths skills are suitable for an intense GCSE course or for a Functional Skills course
