Our Pre-16 provision provides an alternative choice for dedicated students with the commitment and focus to succeed.

Newham College works in partnership with the London Borough of Newham and local secondary schools to allow students aged 14+ a placement to study in an environment that may be more suitable to their personal development and would prefer specialist vocational training.

Only colleges rated Good or Outstanding by Ofsted can offer a 14-16 study programme and it underpins our commitment to provide a full and balanced curriculum to meet the needs, interests and abilities of all students from Entry Level 1 through to Level 2 (GCSE and equivalent).

Our programmes provide a clear pathway into post-16 education with individualised study programmes designed to equip students with the skills and qualifications needed to progress to apprenticeships, employment or higher education.

Study programmes

Newham Late Admissions Programme (NewLAP)

NewLAP is a full-time one-year study programme for Year 11 students who are new to the country and the UK education system.

Students spend four days a week in their subject area (Tutorial, Mathematics, English, Science, IT, Physical Education and Sport, Personal, Social and Health Education, History, Geography, Art and Design, Religious Studies and Business), achieving nationally recognised qualifications that combine practical skills development and academic content. We also provide excellent enrichment opportunities including educational trips and visits.

We offer GCSE, Functional Skills and Unit Award Scheme Qualifications. The subject qualification level is based on the Initial and Diagnostic Assessment upon enrolment.

The programme also includes the option for students to explore the vocational area of their choice with taster sessions on Fridays including Fashion, Hair & Beauty, Travel & Tourism, Sciences, Construction, Motor Vehicle, Digital Skills, Sports, Hospitality & Catering and many others.

Every student has access to pastoral learning support and guidance and we provide advice on a wide range of progression opportunities throughout the year.

Parents and carers receive feedback about their progress through parents’ evenings and regular progress and attendance reports.

Pathways programme

Pathways is a full-time study programme for students in Year 10 (two-year programme) and Year 11 (one year programme) and is aimed at students who may be disengaged from mainstream schools and would prefer pursuing a vocational rather than academic pathway.

Day Release programme

The School Link programme is a structured two-year programme of learning aimed at students in Years 10-11 who may be disengaged from school and are interested in pursuing a vocational route rather than A-Levels.

Students spend one day per week in taster sessions in the curriculum area of their choice – Business, Catering & Hospitality, Childcare, Construction & the Built Environment, Motor Vehicle, Digital Skills, Fashion & Tailoring, Hair & Beauty, Health & Social Care, Policing & Uniform Services, Sports & Professional Fitness and Travel & Tourism – working towards an industry-recognised qualification.

Students can earn an Award or Certificate by the end of the first year and a Certificate or Diploma by the end of the second, depending on GCSE results where applicable.

Students are taught in industry-standard facilities by experienced teachers and are supported by specialist learning mentors.

With individualised study programmes with clear aims, objectives and methods, they gain more independence and learn the essential skills they need for a career in an industry that they’ll be passionate about.

Parents and carers receive feedback about their progress through parents’ evenings and regular progress and attendance reports.

For a day per week, students get to immerse themselves in college life, with the opportunity to mix with students from other schools. And they get a free school meal as well.
