Love Food Champion Challenge

Some of Newham College’s best NVQ level 1 professional cookery students recently competed for the College’s Love Food Champion award by preparing food for hungry customers at Café Football in Westfield Stratford City.

Jamie Dunning, Cristopher Murillo Crespo and Ivy Okei were selected by course tutors to join professional chefs at the busy restaurant, where their skills could be assessed ahead of Newham College’s annual Shining Stars student awards ceremony.

Each of them had the chance to spend 1 ½ hours in the kitchen, under the instruction of head chef Giovann Attard. The winning student will be presented with the Love Food Champion award, sponsored by Café Football, at the Shining Stars student awards ceremony on the 29th June 2017.

Café Football General Manager Liz Reece, said

“We decided to invite the students in for this challenge as we’ve sponsored the Love Food Champion award for a number of years, but this is the first time we’ve selected the winning student by putting them to work with our kitchen staff on a busy day like today”.

She added “The head chef Giovann will pick the winner based on the levels of skill and efficiency they showed while working in the kitchen of a full restaurant. There’s a very different atmosphere at college, where they prepare food with teachers in a familiar environment. Putting them in a professional kitchen gives us a real chance to see how they perform under pressure”.
