Newham College and National Apprenticeships Week 2017
Last week saw Newham College take part in National Apprenticeships Week celebrating and promoting apprenticeships and their benefits to individuals and businesses.
Newham College is one of the largest apprenticeship providers in London, offering more apprenticeships that any other London college. The College has a history of building strong relationships with local businesses and communities throughout the city.
As current and ex-apprentices from around the country stood at the steps of number 10 Downing Street to mark 10 years of National Apprenticeship Week, Newham College launched its inaugural Apprenticeship Awards aboard the Good Hotel, moored in Royal Victoria Docks.
The College recognised the achievements of apprentices and employers from each of the following sectors; Accounting, Beauty Therapy, Business Administration & Customer Services, Children & Young People Workforce, Engineering & Manufacture, Fashion & Textiles, Hospitality & Professional Cookery and Hairdressing & Beauty.
Of the eight apprentices and employers that picked up an award, two were selected for overall awards. Newham College Apprenticeships Apprentice of the Year was won by Charles Pennington and Park Communications picked up Newham College Apprenticeships Employer of the year.
On Monday 6th March the College’s Apprenticeships Team welcomed pupils from Little Ilford School and East London Science School to learn all about apprenticeships and the exciting careers that are available through them.
The apprenticeships team were busy again on Tuesday 7th when they hosted an Apprenticeship Employment Day, enabling young people to drop in and discuss apprenticeship opportunities with the team. Many of the attendees applied for vacancies and some came away with interviews booked with potential employers.
Throughout #NAW2017 the College ran a social media competition encouraging current and ex-apprentices, employers and people interested in apprenticeships to describe an apprenticeship in seven words. Entrants had the chance to win Westfield shopping vouchers.
