Success for Newham College Student in National Catering Challenge

Edward Milne, who studies Hospitality & Catering at Newham College, received a prestigious merit certificate at the grand final of the Dolmio & Uncle Ben's student catering challenge at the Food Service Show on Tuesday 22nd January at the NEC in Birmingham.

The challenge took place in front of a live audience and Edward competed against seven other finalists from various colleges across the UK. The annual cook-off competition is renowned within the hospitality & catering industry, as it provides young chefs with a professional platform to showcase their culinary talents.

Each competitor was tasked with designing two dishes for a casual dining, summer family menu. The dishes had to include one adult dish for parents and one children’s dish for kids. Every recipe had to be creative and needed to contain products from the Uncle Ben’s Foodservice sauce and rice range and/or the Dolmio Professional Foodservice sauce range. Both dishes also had to contain two portions of the recommended five a day per serving, be completely gluten-free and comply with national guidelines on salt.

The initial concepts were assessed by a judging panel who then selected finalists for the live challenge. Edward’s skills were observed by a team of 5 industry experts including the celebrity chef Brian Turner CBE.

On the day, Edward successfully met the requirements and managed to prepare, cook and serve his two dishes within one hour.

The hospitality & catering department at Newham College is extremely pleased for Edward. He did exceptionally well to reach the finals and has been awarded with a Merit certificate. This is an excellent achievement and we’ll continue to support him as he goes on to accomplish even greater levels of success, through his on-going studies and the work experience that all our students gain within industry.
