Course content

The introduction to Electric Vehicle Charging points installer course delivers the basic knowledge, skills and competency required to design, install, commission, and maintain domestic EV systems. This Electric Vehicle Charging course covers the installation of dedicated conductive charging equipment for the charging of pure electric and plug-in hybrid electric road vehicles (PHEV) and includes the extended range of electric vehicles (E-REV).

It covers the installation of both AC and DC charging equipment intended for plug-in electric vehicles (PEV) complying with BS EN 61851 and “The Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installations”. By the end of this course, you will have a basic understanding of:

  • The key requirements for electric vehicle charging equipment (EVCE) installations.
  • Be able to identify the four charging modes and differences between them, plus Wireless Power Transfer types (WPT).
  • Understand the preparation for design and installation of EVCE.
  • Understand the design and install EVCE.
  • Have an awareness of the requirements for initial verification and handover of an EVCE installation.

Entry requirements

Please be prepared to provide your residency documents such as a passport, EU citizen ID card, UK Birth Certificate or Biometric Card. If you have been in the UK for less than 1 years or have entered the UK with a visa you will need to provide evidence that you are eligible to study in the UK - your visa, your biometric card that covers the duration of your course or any relevant home office documents to support your residency should all be provided. If you’re an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen we will need to see evidence of 'Pre-Settled' or 'Settled status' documents. Also for funding purposes we would need to see evidence of payslips if working (within the last 3 months). If you are receiving benefits (e.g JSA, ESA, Universal Credit (UC), Housing benefits etc. please provide evidence of this).

PPE Equipment Required

Due to the nature of the courses face to face delivery may be required in the workshop this will include working with sharp tools and heavy materials at times, no training shoes will be permitted. Steel toe capped/ safety boots are advised for footwear and legs should be covered at all times while practical working is taking place.
