Course content

The course is structured in three stages:

Introductory and Diagnostic
This first stage establishes the skills needed for success, introducing the creative process and the drawing, design, practical, and technical skills required in fashion. You will also develop your study skills, including the ability to critically evaluate your own work and progress, and make initial decisions about future degree level study.

Development and Specialism
This stage will develop and strengthen your personal design skills, and confirm your progression route. Depending on your particular interests you will select one of three pathway options (Womenswear and Menswear; Fashion Identity and Branding; and Fashion Accessories) and build your knowledge and a portfolio of creative design work suitable for degree course application.

Project Proposal and Realisation
In this final phase you will propose and produce your final major project, a personal design project that will integrate and develop all you have learned to date on the course. Final major projects will form part of a group show displayed at the Fashion Textile Museum

You will learn in a variety of ways - by completing exercises and projects, through demonstrations, workshops and talks, and thorough independent study. If you pass the requisite assessments on the course you will gain an ABC Awards Diploma level 3 at pass, merit or distinction level.

The course is based partly at the Fashion and Textile Museum (FTM) near London Bridge, and partly at Newham College in east London. The FTM is owned and operated by Newham College. It has been developed as a prestigious exhibition venue and successful training centre for the fashion industry. Newham College (rated 'Good' by Ofsted) has a long history of working with the fashion sector, as well as a wide range of very successful professional fashion courses.
